As a Managing Partner, Herman is responsible for the overall practice of Philip Sidney and he oversees the technicalities and quality of work. Herman is experienced in applying, organizing and auditing compliance.
He is an economist and Certified Public Auditor with more than 20 years of experience in the financial industry. He has expert knowledge on the application and organization of compliance audit matters with multilateral agreements, United Nations Security Council Resolutions, EU, US and Dutch banking regulations, security regulations, AML / CTF, sanctions and export control regulations and good practices in the international financial industry (e.g. BIS, IAIS, FATF, IMF/Worldbank, OECD, Money Val). His extensive legal expertise finds expression in the way he manages to translate laws and regulations into practical agreements and activities. Clients value his drive, his analytical skills and his meticulous approach.
PETER CORNETMSC, CHAIRMAN OF THE ADVISORY COMMITTEE
Peter has served in various roles within commercial and central banks. His main expertise lies in the field of governance for financial organisations which makes him the ideal sounding-board for directors and auditors.
Principals value Peter for his dedication and no-nonsense approach. Peter is also active as a supervisor and director at various financial institutions such as the Pension Fund of the Netherlands Central Bank and Stichting Landelijk Informatiesysteem Schulden (National Debt Information System). Currently, he is the Chairman of the Advisory Committee of Philip Sidney.
Berco’s 33 years of experience is equally divided into business functions and consulting, with a focus on advising board level to (re)define goals and implement strategy in structure, processes and procedures, and IT.
His specialties are de-complexifying business issues, risk analysis and risk handling. He supported the Central Bank of the Netherlands in aspects of ‘Solvency II’. Berco has co-authored in ’10 Jaar Compliance’, educational books and has written some publications. Besides analytical skills, Berco assumes the role of a Lead Project Manager at Philip Sidney.
After studying Naval Architecture, Erick started his career within Stork and was later appointed as Managing Director of Stork Thailand.
His industry knowledge, creative thinking and management skills made him return to the Netherlands as a Program Manager in Fokker Aerostructures. After several management positions, in 2003 Erick became responsible (EVP) for managing the Fokker participation in American fighter aircraft development program, the Joint Fight Striker ‘JFS’ (later named F-35). A combination of political sense, business entrepreneurship and perseverance is required for such an environment. Erick is currently active in process and tooling development with the aim to reduce the Cost of Compliance in the Global trade environment
JAAP VAN DIJKDIRECTOR
Jaap has extensive experience as director (CFO, CFRO, CEO) with two financial institutions and has often been confronted with very challenging governance and in-control issues regarding business operations and associated risks.
Close interaction with external accountants, regulators and supervisors was part of his work. Jaap, therefore, knows how to keep a fine balance between what is explicitly required by the regulatory authorities and its translation into practicable yet effective solutions.
During his banking time, Jaap was responsible for many global M&A transactions of a large multinational corporation and has worked for 15 years at the Ministry of Finance (export credit insurance, legislation on banking supervision, management/privatisation of state-owned enterprises and the provision of corporate finance with partial government guarantee). In brief: Jaap has worked in for various sectors and businesses and is in a position to take a helicopter view, considering business issues from different angels, zooming in on detail if necessary and may consider issues from multiple perspectives.
Damien is a French lawyer dedicated to a worldwide approach of governance (security, home affairs, justice sector, international trade) issues.
He developed a wide experience in legal and management advice in Europe, Africa, Northern Africa and Egypt, for both public and private sector. His sense of diplomacy makes him comfortable in multicultural environments. He is the author of “Commerce et sécurité, les exportations sensibles dans la mondialisation”, L’Harmattan. Since 2014, Damien has been associated with Philip Sidney. He manages its Francophone market in Financial Economic Crimes, Export Controls and Security Sector Reform.
Marlène is a senior compliance and governance professional with in-depth knowledge of governance, behaviour and culture for financial institutions.
She has worked for various multinationals in various positions, such as legal counsel and Secretary to a Supervisory Board, and also has more than 10 years’ experience in the position of external compliance and governance professional for various major financial institutions. Marlène has been active for an international public notary office and a corporate governance consultancy firm in the area of corporate governance, for NGO’s and multinationals. In the field of compliance, she developed and further strengthened the compliance function at various banks and insurance companies. For a financial supervisor Marlène repositioned the Compliance & Integrity Department, developed integrity trainings for new employees and co-drafted its Code of Conduct.
Since 2012, Marlène is Senior Fellow at the Erasmus School of Law (EUR)/Master Financial Law. Her research projects mainly focus on corporate governance for financial institutions. She has co-authored numerous articles and a book on compliance, governance and codes of conduct. Marlène trains supervisory board members on integrity and integrity dilemmas and has presented in-house workshops on banking governance and integrity. She is also co-Chairman of the Expert Group on Behaviour & Culture of the Dutch Association of Compliance Professionals (VCO), which has developed a soft-controls based toolbox for compliance professionals to support their management on improvement of behaviour and culture. This initiative has been granted the National Compliance Award 2017.
Overall, Marlène is experienced in the areas of compliance, governance and governance codes, three lines of defense, anti-fraud, (business and personal) integrity, behaviour and culture, soft controls and ‘controlled and sound operations’ (‘beheerste en integere bedrijfsvoering’).
LIZA MOHAMADM.A. CONSULTANT / EDITOR
Liza moved to the Netherlands after graduating from King’s College London with a Master’s Degree in International Political Economy. She brings with her more than a decade of experience as an investigative journalist in her home country and also holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Media and Communications.
As a consultant, she advises international businesses, mainly financial institutions on how to achieve and maintain compliance in the area of mitigating financial crime risks such as money laundering, terrorist financing, corruption and sanctions. At present, she is actively giving practical advice to businesses on the implementation of control measures necessary to comply with the General Data Protection Regulation.
LOES JANSONB.COM CONSULTANT
Loes has wide operational experience in the Aerospace industry’s import and export compliance. Previously, she worked for Lockheed Martin Commercial Flight Training, setting up and managing the shipping department.
As shipping manager, she helped the legal counsel establish an Internal compliance program. She was also responsible for classification of dual-use goods, export license applications, third-party screening and provided in-house compliance awareness trainings. Graduated with a B.Com in International Business and Languages, she has a strong work ethic and is focused on creating a workable solution for our clients’ compliance issues.
Songul is an experienced banker with wide experience in Structured Trade and Commodity Finance. Throughout her banking career, she has worked with many medium to large trading companies mainly active in metals and minerals industry. As a director, Songul is deeply involved in international trade and brings hands-on experience on financial economic crime, sanctions, and export control.
ERIK MULDERCONSULTANT (at Thales)
As an Export Control Officer at Thales, Erik has more than 15 years’ experience in export control and he keeps his knowledge current by attending seminars, visiting export control authorities, reading relevant publications, newsletters and (subscribed) magazines.
After secondary education, he attended special courses in procurement (NEVIE 1 and 2) and several export control trainings (EAR and ITAR) through the years.
He has more than 30 years’ experience in the Defense industry, of which more than 15 years experience in the procurement of export controlled commodities. Furthermore he is specialized in managing the export license processes (preparation, submission, control, recordkeeping etc.), domestically as well as abroad.
JO LAUMENMSC, MTD, PARTNER (at Thales)
Jo focuses on Import and Export Compliance. With a broad experience in engineering, quality management and export control in the nuclear and defense industry, he has the capacity to translate export regulatory requirements into Export Compliance Management Systems and the implementation of these systems.
With two Master degrees in Mathematics as a background, he has strong analytical skills and with a pragmatic approach, he strives for creating a workable solution. As an Export Control Officer, he renewed and simplified the Export Compliance Management System including the supporting tooling. He set up and manages an Export Control Coordinator network within a large organization. Among other things he is involved in export compliance awareness trainings and workshops, classification of military and dual-use goods and technology and export license applications. Jo is a Dutch native speaker, fluent in English and has a good knowledge of German.
LOUIS SAMBROSPARTNER (at Thales)
Louis has extensive experience on Import and Export Compliance. As an Export Control Director, Louis has more than 10 years’ experience in the implementation of the functions and processes set forth in the Export Compliance as well as the “top-down” management approach within Thales Netherland B.V.
He is active in several branch organisations like the ASD (Aero Space and Defence Industries Association of Europe) and in the Netherlands the NIDV- and VNO/NCW export control expert group.
After graduation at the Technical College he started 40 years ago at Thales Netherland B.V. where he holds several functions. Besides Export Control Director one of the major experiences were as Purchaser of investment programs with a significant US content.
To keep his knowledge actual he attends several conferences (BIS / SIA in the US and the SMi Defence export in Europe) on a yearly basis.
